UK visa requirement for Saint Lucia citizens from 5 march 2026
On 5 March 2026, the United Kingdom implemented a significant change to its immigration policy that directly affects citizens of Saint Lucia. Prior to this date, Saint Lucian nationals could enter the UK either visa-free or using an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for short visits. However, as of 5 March 2026, the UK now requires all Saint Lucian passport holders to obtain a visa prior to travel, regardless of the purpose of the visit. This decision has been formalized in the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules (HC 1695) along with an accompanying Explanatory Memorandum (HC 1691).

What Changed on 5 March 2026 ?
For many years, Saint Lucia citizens could travel to the United Kingdom without a visa for short visits. Whether it was for tourism, visiting family, business meetings, or short-term study, travelers enjoyed visa-free entry. Later, the UK introduced the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which allowed Saint Lucians to pre-approve their travel online, making entry even easier. However, the ETA was not a full visa. Travelers were still subject to checks on arrival, and some overstayed or applied for asylum. To improve security and screening, the UK decided to introduce a new visa requirement.
On 5 March 2026, the UK Home Office introduced important changes for Saint Lucian travelers from 15:00 GMT on 5 March 2026, all Saint Lucian citizens must apply for a UK visa before traveling this includes,
ETA no longer valid
ETA applications for Saint Lucians were closed on 5 March 2026. Any ETA submitted after this date will not be processed. ETAs issued before this date are only valid if the traveler arrives before the transitional deadline.
Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV)
Saint Lucians connecting through UK airports without passing through border control now need a DATV. This ensures transit travelers are screened in advance, even if they do not enter the UK.
Transitional grace period
To help travelers adjust, there is a grace period until 16 April 2026 at 15:00 BST. Travelers with a confirmed ETA booked before 5 March 2026 can still travel without a full visa. After 16 April, a visa is mandatory for all Saint Lucians.
Why the UK made this change ?
The UK government introduced the new visa requirement for Saint Lucian citizens due to several important factors. One of the main reasons is the rising number of asylum claims. In recent years, some travelers entered the UK using visa-free or ETA travel and then applied for asylum, which created pressure on the UK’s immigration system and administrative processes.
Another factor involves Saint Lucia’s Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program. This program allows individuals to obtain Saint Lucian citizenship in exchange for approved investments, benefiting the country’s economy. However, the UK expressed concerns that some passports issued through the CBI program might be used for overstays or migration without proper screening. By requiring visas in advance, the UK aims to ensure that all travelers, including those with CBI passports, undergo proper pre-travel checks.
Finally, the new policy is part of the UK’s broader effort to strengthen border security. Requiring visas before travel enhances pre-screening for all visitors, helps prevent misuse of visitor privileges, and ensures compliance with UK immigration rules. This change aligns Saint Lucia with other countries whose citizens are required to obtain a visa before entering the UK.
How to Apply for a UK Visa ?
Saint Lucian travelers should begin by identifying the correct type of visa for their journey, whether it is a Standard Visitor Visa, DATV, or a long-term visa. Once determined, they must gather all necessary documents, including a valid passport, travel itinerary and accommodation details, proof of funds, invitation letters if visiting family or friends, and evidence of ties to Saint Lucia, such as employment, property ownership, or family connections.
The visa application is submitted online via the UK visa portal, after which applicants must schedule and attend a biometric appointment. At the appointment, travelers submit their biometrics and may be asked to provide additional documents. The decision typically takes 8–12 weeks, although expedited processing may be available in select cases. Once the visa is approved, travelers can journey to the UK while ensuring full compliance with entry requirements.
